A good work waiting to be done May 7, 2005

This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but I thought it might be worth a go.

A certain puppy farm near Ballarat will be closing in July. As a result, a couple of hundred dogs (no exageration) will need to be cared for, rehabilitated, fostered and rehomed. These are dogs which have been used as breeding machines and have spent their entire lives in pens living pretty rough. At the least they will need TLC and socialisation to make them suitable as pets. Some will need a lot more - extensive vet care, training, very careful handling.

All the guff is here. Animal Liberation Victoria is co-ordinating the rescue. Anyone who can help should contact these people.

Help does not necessarily mean taking on a dog. It could be donating stuff - food, blankets, collars, jumpers (little long haired dogs will probably need to be shaved off), dog toys, money (even a few bucks would help). It could be transporting dogs to people who can care for them if you have suitable vehicle. It may be just spreading the word to people you know who may be willing & able to do something

For example, I can’t take a dog. With my op coming up I can’t really offer to supply transport until I’m safe to drive again. I can, however, knit some jumpers and blankies and donate them.

The people running this rescue are private individuals who will be putting their own funds, time and energy into it and I’m sure they’ll be happy to accept any help you can offer.

Oh Nicky! Reading the stories and seeing the pictures made me cry (again). I wish I was so much closer, but I suppose a little bit of my money will just have to do.

There will be too many dogs to be fostered in Melbourne. Some will be going to Sydney and there is the possibility that some may go as far as Brisbane, if that’s where there are people able to foster.

Thanks for this post, Nicky. I generally avoid newsmedia and hadn’t heard about this before, but now I’ve contacted ALV about helping out.
