Yesterday was my one free day in my week off. My day to do whatever I wanted.

I’ve been saying for ages that I really wanted to go for a wander along Brunswick St because it’s been a while and I’ve always loved the shops. So off I went.

I strolled. I looked in Scally & Trombone - full of scarves and hats that I could knit in an evening and bags that I could buy from the designer’s shop in Little Lonsdale st. I poked around Quick Brown Fox, but had to go when the shop assistant started shadowing me too closely (I hate that). I looked at, but didn’t dare enter, the pet shop that I bought Cosmo from (kitten withdrawal is still too fresh). I wandered through the nursery, impressed as always by the variety and sheer gorgeousness of what they had. I looked at the curtain and the Nicola Cerrini bags in Kleen. I ummed and ahhed in the clearance outlet selling Alannah Hill and Dangerfield. I smiled wryly at the Camper knockoffs in a shoe shop. I very nearly succumbed to buying something far too expensive for Finn in the toy shop. And I just barely beat the parking officer back to the car before I toddled off home, footsore and tired.

But I didn’t really enjoy it. Not the way I used to. It all seemed just a bit too self-conscious. And I couldn’t help wondering if I’d have had more fun window shopping and been less hassled by shop assistants at Knifepoint. In the end I decided that I should have taken the dogs to the beach - the other thing I’ve been wanting to do for ages.

At least you know the relative attractions of Brunswick Street vs the beach now. Funny how some things aren’t quite what you remember them to be when you try them again.
