Resistance is futile October 26, 2005
Yesterday I worked at home and, while my output wouldn’t set any records, I basically achieved what I set out to do.
Today I’m in the office and I’ve got very little done. I’m only just now starting on the task I wanted to start when I arrived 7 hours ago and I’m dying to go home.
I just can’t seem to focus here. I don’t know what it is. Whether it’s the pervading atmosphere of the place, the constant background noise, the presence of other people to talk to, or just that fact that I fundementally don’t want to be here, I don’t know. Whatever it is, it’s killed my motivation and concentration.
I really wish my workplace would actually embrace the flexible working arrangement hype it puts out and allow me to work from home for some of the time. On current indications I’d definitely be more productive and, I suspect, heaps happier.

Ah - don’t we all wish things like that about our workplaces. I suggested to my employer that I want a laptop so I can go and work somewhere quiet if I need to. I want a new one, that will run the software I use as fast as a laptop can and with a batter that actually works too. So I said, I’m willing to salary sacrifice for a brand spanking new laptop that you’re willing to let me use at work. Do you know what I’m getting? Someone’s old, clapped-out machine. If it doesn’t do what I need it to do, i will be back on the salary sacrifice war path.
