Two Things January 16, 2006
There are 2 things which have made an impression on me in the last few days:
This is appalling. I don’t have any other words for it.
This had quite a different effect:
Until you stop seeing the sex, and start seeing human beings trying to figure it out, just like you, we’ll never move forward. This is the burden of the conservatives. The progressives are mostly there. This is the civil rights burden of our time. It’s not a rejection of God. It’s not a rejection of religion. It’s a rejection of hate, prejudice and ignorance. It’s a rejection of the most evil part of any organized group, Jesus or otherwise

It was as recently as last Friday that I was abused by a drunk on the street, in the middle of the city, for looking like a lesbian. It was lunch time. Plenty of people forget that there are other people around who want to beat the crap out of me simply for being me.
Why does it matter in whose arms you find solace, or in whose mind your soul mate resides? If society is about citizenship, then surely, surely your contribution as a citizen is what counts. Isn’t it?
I can accept (grudgingly) that they we elected to practice exlusion and division within Australian borders and even to wage war on other nation states. But meddling with paperwork to mess with how people live their lives outside our borders seemed bold and arrogant even for these bastards.
Ruddock is also f*cking around with heterosexual marriage. Marriage celebrants must now use the terms “husband” and “wife”, instead of “partner” or any other term the couple may prefer, during the ceremony. It’s pretty frightening what the right is doing of late.
are these people living in the real world or what? if they want to go and run some restrictive religious group, go for it, but don’t meddle in the lives of normal people (no offence to religious types intended).
what sucks is the extent to which gay people sacrifice in order to appear more normal in order not to suffer from exclusion or discrimination. There’s so many people who aren’t themselves socially, in order to be themselves sexually.
We had a friend take her own life last week - I don’t know the full extent of the reasons why, but she’s been to hell and back with attempting to parent, and other things.
I wish I could argue this stuff rationally, but I wish moreso that someone in the Labor party could and would.
