We are becoming a nocturnal family December 30, 2006

There are times when our little family seems to be more active after dark than during the daylight hours. And this is without Leila’s presence, although she does her best to contribute.

Last night Finn came to visit at about 2.30 am having seen a ‘whale’. We retrieved Blankie, dummy & pillow from his room and had a short cuddle in Mum & Dad’s bed, along with a chat about Pingu being afraid of shadows (in an episode Finn watched about 4 months ago) and how we aren’t scared of shadows. Then Finn announced he was ready to go back to his Thomas bed and I took him.

When I got back to our room I discovered that Mark was wide awake and, apparently, had not been to sleep at all in the preceding 4 hours. This was not a good sign.

About half an hour later Finn was back with something else to tell me. He knocked back the offer of another cuddle in our bed and even refused my offer to take him back to his own bed. He said “I can go by myself” (or something like that). Struck by his maturity, I chose to be optimistic and settled down to sleep again, telling Mark to let me know if he needed anything.

A while later I was woken by Mark going into the ensuite and then noticed light coming from the direction of the loungeroom, so I went to investigate. I found Finn examining the box from one of his Christmas presents that we’d only just got around to opening. I was trying to convince him to go back to bed again when Mark was calling out to me from the ensuite. In the end Finn was convinced and Mark did manage to get up off the ensuite floor and find me.

I headed back to bed while Mark stayed up to watch telly in the hopes of staving off insanity. He managed that, but didn’t get back to sleep. When I got up he hopped into our bed. I gave him a couple of aspirin & codeine tablets I use for migraines and sinusitus. I was hoping that the codeine would relax him enough to enable him to sleep and it seems to have worked. When I looked in on him about half an hour ago his eyes were closed and he was mostly still, although his feet were moving so I know he’s alive. I hoping he will get enough sleep to break the back of whatever lurgi he’s picked up.
