I headed out today and joined the Christmas shopping fray (and, no, this isn’t going to be a rhyming post) and bought ALL of Finn and Leila’s Christmas presents from us and Santa. I was tempted to do it in a series of little trips but decided that band aid approach was bit. Rip it all off in one go. So I am tired and a bit footsore. I have a headache and my tinnitus is screaming. But it is done.

For the record, here’s the list:
Finn -
Thomas 2 wheeler bike with training wheels and blue helmut with yellow flames on it.
Duplo Gordon and Toby.
Set of stamps and inkpads.
Shark game where you try to extract items from the shark’s mouth before it shuts.
I’ve also already bought him a handmade wooden puzzle and a Threadless tshirt.

Leila -
Walker/activity thingy with plenty of lights and things that will make annoying noises.
Rocking horse thing that she’s probably still too young for.
Set of bath toys so that Finn can stop whinging about her using his.
Board book with lots of touchy feely bits to it.
She also already has a handmade doll and a Threadless tshirt waiting for her.

I tried to keep this thing that I read on Girl Detective in mind as I was shopping - something to cuddle and love, something to read, toys and games, a gift of activity and a gift of artistic expression.

Finn doesn’t have the something to cuddle and love or the something to read in his collection. I figure books are a likely present from the extended families so it was best to leave the field open for them. For the something to love, though, I’m wondering whether a gold fish might be a good idea. Obviously I will be doing 99% of the care of it, but I wonder whether it might be time to introduce Finn to the idea of a pet of his own and the responsibilities attached … Something for Mark & I to talk about.

Leila doesn’t have a gift of artistic expression because she is 9 months old (today!). She expresses herself artistically by wearing a large portion of every meal.

So I am all but done with the shopping centre hell that is Christmas. This year Mark & I are buying ourselves a joint present, rather than a present each. The only left is for me to take the kids shopping for their gifts for Mark and vice versa.
